- Suggestions for Breaking the Divorce Rate in Korea

The divorce rate has been high-rocketing these years. In 2002, the crude divorce rate was 3.0. But it was increased to 3.5 in 2003. Marriage in Korea is disintegrating. It appears that married people are less likely to tolerate a bad marriage any more. If they find some incompatible issues in their relationship, they want out. Statistics indicates that children in divorced family are prone to end up in poverty, drop out of school, or suffer low self-esteem and dysfunctional relationship. So, the government considers to make a mandatory law of waiting period for three to six months before divorce. In this study, the writer examines ways to increase happiness in marriage and reduce divorce by suggesting Covenant Marriage Law and Community Marriage Policy which could expand and strengthen the government idea of waiting period. These approaches can help couples who want to stay married by teaching them how to resolve conflict, improve communication, and treat each other with respect. He ends this paper with some practical suggestions to the Korean Association of Christian Counseling & Psychotherapy.
