The IP(client) has been suffering from depression developed from inter-related multiple causes. She has been under incessant mental/emotional stresses in her trouble-laden relationship with her mother-in-law, who is believed to be extremely engrossed in the thought that her daughter-in-law robbed her of her beloved son. The enmity between them has generated complications in her marital life that aggravated her anxiety and nervousness. To make the matter worse, the family feud has led her elder son to mental deficiency characterized by autism. The therapist practiced Minuchin's Structural Family Therapy as a therapeutic method to this therapeutic case. It is believed that the method is a highly recommendable one in dealing with psychological problems emerging out of troubled transactions and interactions within a family or family lives interconnected. The therapeutic process begins with differentiating and individualizing the client from her family of origin, and strengthening her parental and spouse subsystems with her mother-in-law and husband, respectively. The initial stage is designed in the belief that bettering the client's parental and spouse subsystems is the first thing to do to help solve not only the depression of the client herself but also her elder son's mental problems. It should be noted that since children's mental disorder are usually linked closely to the status of their parents' spouse subsystem, treatment for the client along with the enactment and task assignment becomes integral to tackle the mental problems suffered by the client's son. Thereafter, active and direct structural methods are used for the treatment of the son. The result of the therapy shows IP and her family problems has improved with the relationship among the individuals concerned positively restructured. Considering that visiting a counselor still remains rare practice, the therapist advises alternative methods to facilitate visits to a professional counselor or a family therapist.
