본 연구는 이야기치료의 발전에 기여한 마이클 화이트의 생애와 유산을 기독교 관점으로 어떻게 재평가될 수 있는지를 밝힘으로써 이야기치료가 한국의 기독교 상담의 발전에 줄 수 있는 시사점이 무엇인지를 찾는 데 있다. 이를 위해, 본 연구에서는 호주 덜위치 센터를 중심으로 발전된 내러티브적 접근에 대한 텍스트와 마이클 화이트의 생애와 사상에 대해 평가되어진 여러 문헌들을 바탕으로 이야기치료에 기여해 온 마이클 화이트의 유산을 평가하고 기독교 관점에서의 비평 작업을 시도하였다. 이러한 연구 전개를 통해서 마이클 화이트가 초기에는 인류문화적인 사고를 바탕으로 이야기의 해석과 의미를 치료에 적용하는 독특한 치료체계를 형성하였으며 이후 구성주의 시각과 사회비평 철학을 받아들여 개인과 가족의 삶의 문제에 정치적 의미를 부여하는 사회 문화적 비평을 덧붙였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 기독교 관점과 마이클 화이트의 유산과의 관계에서 공통점들을 발견하였다. 이것을 바탕으로 단순히 기독교 관점으로의 일방적인 수용이나 방법론의 변형이 아니라 발전적인 부분으로의 재구성을 꾀하여 이야기치료와 기독교 상담과의 접목을 희망하는 상담가들에게 대안성의 방향을 제공할 수 있음을 시사하였다. 그러므로 본 연구를 통해서 기독교 상담가들과 한국의 가족상담 실천가들에게 마이클 화이트가 이야기치료에 끼친 유산들을 고찰함으로써 실천적이고 임상적 함의를 찾는 데 본 연구의 의의가 있다.
The purpose of this study is to find what is the implication that Narrative Therapy can give the advancement of Korean Christian counseling as revealing how Michael White’s thoughts contributing to development of Narrative Therapy can be revalued. Through this study, there has been found that Michael White formed the unique therapy system applying interpretation and meaning of story based on the idea of cultural anthropology in early stage. Afterward he accepted constructivist view and social criticism philosophy and added sociocultural criticism giving political meaning to matters on personal and added sociocultural criticism giving political meaning to matters on personal and family’s life. Also, founding the similarities between the Christian perspective and Michael White’s though and based on this, not simply unilateral acceptance to the Christian perspective or modifying methodology, attempting recomposition of progressive part, I suggested this study can provide directions of alternative solution to the Christian counselor. Thus, this study can contribute to searching clinical implications to the Christian counselor and family therapy counselors in Korea helping comprehension of Narrative Therapy and the inventor.
