본 논문은 Martin Buber의 ‘나와 너’(I and Thou) 개념을 페미니즘의 관점으로 재조명하고, 그것이 집단주의 문화 속의 여성들을 상담하는 데 어떻게 사용될 수 있는지를 살펴보았다. 이것을 위해 문화적, 성별, 그리고 임상적 요소들을 ‘나와 너’ 이분법과 대화의 장으로 끌어들였다. 논문 주제의 기본적 배경을 제공하기 위한 수단으로 하나님과 사람, 또한 사람과 사람 사이의 ‘나와 너’ 관계를 논하였다. 집단주의 문화 배경을 가진 여성들 특유의 ‘나–너’ 심리적 현상을 이해함에 있어 세 가지 유형의 ‘나’(I) 혹은 ‘자기개념’(self–concept)을 분석하였다. 이 세 가지 ‘나’는 ‘보이지 않는 나’(the invisible I), ‘희생적인 나’(the sacrificial I), 그리고 ‘열등한 나’(the inferior I)이다. 마지막으로 집단주의 문화 배경을 가진 여성들의 이 세 가지 독특한 ‘나’ 개념을 바탕으로 하여 그들을 위한 구체적인 임상적 방안을 살펴보았다. 집단주의 문화 속 여성들의 더 나은 ‘나와 너’ 관계의 개선과 그녀들의 총체적 웰빙의 향상을 위해 세 가지 임상방법들, 즉 ‘일치성’(congruence), ‘상호관계성’(mutuality), 그리고 ‘범문화적 상호교감’(interpathy)을 제시하고 논하였다.
This essay reconsiders Buber’s I and Thou concept from a feminist perspective and investigates the ways in which it can be utilized for counseling women from collectivist cultures. To accomplish this, cultural, gender, and clinical constellations have been brought to conversation with the I and Thou dichotomy. The I and Thou relations between God and human, and between human and human are discussed as a way of providing the foundational background for the current inquiry. In order to understand the unique psychical phenomena of I and Thou of women from collectivist background, the three qualities of ‘I’s or self–concepts have been explored. The three ‘I’s encompass ‘the invisible I,’ ‘the sacrificial I,’ and ‘the inferior I.’ On the basis of these particular ‘I’ traits, the clinical implications for counseling women from collectivist cultures are presented. The three therapeutic methods of ‘congruence,’ ‘mutuality,’ and ‘interpathy’ are offered and discussed in relation to counseling collectivist women for enhancing the betterment of their I and Thou relations and thus their overall wellbeing.
