본 연구의 목적은 공동체(교회) 내에서 이루어지는 가십(gossip)담론에 대해서 질적인 탐구를 통해서 본질적 특성을 탐색해 보고자 하였다. 가십은 교회공동체에서 회중들의 소통과 감정이입의 도구라는 긍정적 요소를 가지고 있다. 도널드 캡스에 따르면, 가십담론은 공동체와 개인을 파괴할 수도 있지만 창조적 가치도 있기 때문에 상담적으로 중요한 연구 주제이다. 이를 위해 6명의 여성 참여자들로부터 심층면접을 실시하여 자료를 수집하고 질적으로 분석했다. 신뢰성과 타당성을 위해서 분석과정에서 삼각검증법을 활용했다. 그 결과 일곱 가지 특성을 도출하였다. 가십 담론의 특성은 방어성, 긍정성, 부정성, 공간성, 대상성, 성별성, 그리고 취약성이었다. 지금까지 가십연구들은 정치나 언론에서 권력에 대한 항쟁의 관점에서 논의되어 왔다. 하지만 본 연구에서는 가십이 기본적으로 부정적인 특징을 가지고 있지만 본질적으로 긍정적이면서도 치유적 특성을 가지고 있으므로 상담적 자원으로 활용할 수 있다는 점에서 그 의미를 찾을 수 있다.
The purpose of this study has sought the intrinsic characteristics through the qualitative search on the gossip discourse formed within the community(church). Gossip has a positive element in the church community as a tool for communication and empathy for the congregation. According to Donald Capps, the gossip discourse may destroy community and individuals but it also has the creative value that it is an important research theme in counseling aspect. For this purpose, the in–depth interview was implemented from 6 female participants to collect the data and analyzed it qualitatively. For the reliability and validity, the triangulation was facilitated in the process of analysis. As a result 7 characteristics were formulated. The characteristics of the gossip discourse were protectiveness, positivity, negativity, spatiality, relativity, gender, and vulnerability. To this point, those gossip studies have been discussed under the point of view to struggle against the power in politics and press. However, under this study, the implication could be found in the aspect that the gossip has the negative characteristics in general but it has the intrinsic characteristics of positive and healing to be used as counseling resource.
