The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of the ‘manic defence’ which is one of the major defences in Christian(Pastoral) counseling field and to seek therapeutic use of it. The manic defence is one of Klein’s defense mechanism with ‘projective identification’, which prevents treatment and avoids the core emotions caused by avoidance and denial of the loss. The manic defence, however, is one of the mechanisms clients coping with the loss and protecting self. Therefore, exploring the clint’s manic defences and using them therapeutically in counseling can help to form affect of mourning and recovery. This study examined the concept, formation cause, process of the manic defence that cross between ‘paranoid-schizoid position’ and ‘depressive position’. In addition, the thesis analyzed the clinical manifestations of the manic defence in clinical practice, and examined the framework of the analysis and its application and limitations in theoretical and clinical areas.
