본 연구의 목적은 한국 최초의 근대음악교과서인 『보통교육창가집』을 중심으로 새롭게 발굴한 조선어 가사의 출전을 보고하고 수록 가사의 특징을 검토하여 그 역사적 가치를 새롭게 조명하는 것이다. 이를 위해 『보통교육창가집』의 편찬 배경을 살피고, 수록된 27곡을 대상으로 기존에 알려진 출전과 새롭게 발견된 자료를 정리하여 면밀하게 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 기존에는 한국의 전통 노래가 1곡이었다고 알려졌으나 이번 연구로 1곡을 추가 발견해 총 2곡임을 알 수 있었고, 일본어 가사 포함 총 4곡의 출전을 새롭게 규명했다. 가사의 특징으로는 첫째, 다양한 운율과 문체가 혼재되어 전근대에서 근대로 넘어가는 과도기적 노랫말이었다. 둘째, 일본의 창가를 번역한 경우는 일본의 역사, 지리, 군가 등 일본 특성이 짙은 가사는 배제되었다. 셋째, 새로 발굴된 가사는 조선의 사설시조,『명심보감』에서 발췌됐고, 조선의 교육관과 시어가 반영되었다. 이로써 『보통교육창가집』은 단순한 일본 창가의 번안본이 아니며, 한정적인 정치적 상황에서도 조선의 문화적 정체성을 담고자 시도한 교과서임을 확인하였다.
The purpose of this study is to report on the newly discovered Korean lyrics of Botong gyoyuk changgajip(1910) the first modern music textbook in Korea, and to shed light on textbook’s historical value by re-examining the characteristics of these lyrics. Both previously known and newly discovered sources for the 27 songs included in Botong gyoyuk changgajip were summarized and analyzed closely. Previously, only one traditional Korean song was identified; this study, however, found one more song, indicating that there were a total of two songs. The sources for three out of 13 songs of unknown origin were also newly identified. First, with its variety of rhymes and styles, changga lyrics were characterized as forming part of transitional songs from pre-modern to modern times. Second, when translating Japanese changa, lyrics with strong Japanese characteristics (e.g., Japanese history, geography, and military songs) were excluded. Third, the newly discovered lyrics were extracted from Joseon’s Sijo and Myeongsimbogam and reflected Joseon’s educational views and poetry. It was confirmed that Botong gyoyuk changgajip is not just another version of Japanese changa, but a textbook that attempted to contain Joseon’s cultural identity, even in limited political situations.
