The purpose of this study is to identify the current status and conditions of suspected borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) elementary students in the Chungcheongbuk-do region. For this purpose, a survey was conducted using the Borderline Intellectual Functioning Screening Scale among the parents of 639 elementary school students in Chungcheongbuk-do. A full-scale survey was also conducted on all students in a randomly selected class within the sampled schools. The survey results were analyzed with weighted data. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, the proportion of suspected BIF elementary students in the Chungcheongbuk-do region was 16.5%. Second, regarding gender differences, 22% of male students and 10.7% of female students were identified as suspected BIF, showing a significant difference between genders. Third, the proportion of suspected BIF students by grade was highest in the second and third grades(21.6%), although no significant differences were found by grade. Fourth, among the domains of daily maladjustment, the at-risk group showed the highest prevalence in the domain of cognitive functioning, whereas the potential BIF group showed the highest prevalence in the domain of personality and emotional regulation. Fifth, significant differences in daily maladjustment and domain-specific problem scores were observed among the normal, potential BIF, and at-risk groups, with the most substantial group differences found in the domain of social functioning. Based on these results, the implications and limitations of this study are discussed.
