This study explores the clinical value and dual nature of erotic countertransference within the psychotherapeutic process, examining the mechanisms and practical challenges involved in its effective management. A comprehensive literature review confirms that erotic countertransference is not merely an intrusive obstacle; rather, it serves as pivotal data for understanding the client’s unconscious desires and object relations, possessing the potential to facilitate therapeutic transformation. The study delineates the management of erotic countertransference across three dimensions: risky, protective, and transformative mechanisms. The risk mechanism refers to boundary violations where erotic affect loses its symbolic quality and transitions into actual enactment. To mitigate this, the protective mechanism emphasizes the maintenance of the therapeutic frame and the importance of countertransference awareness and management. The transformative mechanism involves the process by which these affects are symbolized within the analytic third space and sublimated into "therapeutic love." Notably, this research highlights how the conservative sexual culture and the collectivistic, hierarchical characteristics of Korean society may exacerbate clinical isolation and resistance among therapists. Consequently, the study proposes the establishment of education and training systems that specifically incorporate the clinical understanding and management of erotic countertransference. This research is significant in that it expands the discourse on erotic countertransference within the Korean clinical context and provides a theoretical foundation for utilizing it as a therapeutic catalyst.
