Since the service industry will increasingly become more important than the
manufacturing industry in the 21st century, the support for and development of the
industry will result in a solid foundation for the national competitiveness in the global
marketplace.
Although it provides minimal contribution to the national economy, the beauty
care industry is important as it is closely related with the daily life of people.
Therefore, extensive study on this area will be required.
The purpose of this study is to identify the needs of adult education in the
beauty care industry for enhanced competitiveness and to reflect them in the lifelong
educational programs developed by universities and lifelong educational institutions so
that such efforts contribute to the development of the beauty care industry and the
competence of individuals engaged in the industry.
This study is based on both documental research and surveys, while the
approach to competitiveness and education is focused on four human resources aspects:
business information, investment minds, employee competency and activities for
customer satisfaction. The findings are as follows:
First, the competitive level of the personnel in the beauty care industry is
average with certain areas that show lack of competitiveness. Therefore, a
comprehensive measure to resolve the issue is required.
Second, employees show poorer competitiveness than managers. In particular,
the education for younger employees or employees of smaller business or with less
career is needed.
Third, the personnel residing in rural areas and with little experience show
poorer competence. Therefore, measures to provide educational support for them is
required.
Fourth, as for the curriculum provided by universities and regional lifelong
education organizations, a special bachelor degree-level education based on “curriculum
credits bank” type was preferred.
