21세기 문화중심사회로의 전환과 더불어 문화와 문화교육의 의미 중요성은 갈수록 점증하고 있으나, 이와 관련한 학문적 논의와 교육 실천적인 대안마련에는 미소한 실정이다. 이는 쉽게 접근하기 어려운 문화교육의 개념적 광의성 때문이며, 다른 하나는 문화교육과 연계된 관련 학문의 다양성으로 이러한 문제를 주도적으로 이끌어갈 학문의 모호성에서 기인한다. 그러나 우리가 문화교육에 관심을 가지고 있다면, 우선 교육학적 차원에서 문화교육의 의미와 역할을 찾아야 한다. 문화교육은 단순히 문화만을 가르치는 일반교육에 대한 대안교육의 형태는 아니다. 이미 제도화된 교육체제 속에 문화교육은 내재하고 있으며, 단지 각박한 사회 현실에서 그 의미의 중요성과 역할이 커가고 있다는 사실이다. 평생교육의 한 유형으로 문화교육은 생애 단계별 교육 방법과 내용의 차이와 심화 정도에 따라 교육이 가능하다. 아직은 이러한 논의 자체가 초보적 이해의 수준에 있으나, 문화교육에 대한 다양한 이해 방법의 구안과 실천적 방안에 대한 논의가 필요하다.
The purpose of this paper is to study the meaning of the cultural education in lifelong learning society that is focused on 'culture'. Accordingly, this paper examined the possibility of the practice for the cultural education in the life phase, moreover discusses preparing for the basis of a lifelong learning. Cultural education can provide all persons with a subjective experience for the cultural learning and cultural socialization. Most of the cultural socialization is made at home, in school or at a workplace. We can understand cultural socialization as a processing for obtain a cultural competence. Therefore, cultural education has to be related to educational system for the chance of actively socialization. There is little discussion about the role of cultural education in schooling. As a matter of fact, cultural education and learning has been dealt at the outside of schooling and almost ignored in it. If cultural education is so important for general human education, first of all, it must be treated in educational contents and goals in the education system. In other words, the cultural education has to come to light in the whole category of education. The cultural education has to be researched the theoretical background and developed the applying and practicing strategies to the educational field as well.
