이 연구는 고령사회를 곧 맞게 되는 한국사회 노인들의 사회활동에 대한 진단과 전망을 논의하였다. 이를 위해 먼저, 노년기 사회활동을 분리이론(Disengagement theory)과 활동이론(Activity theory)이라는 상반된 사회학적 개념으로 조명한 후에, 두 이론의 결함을 보완하여 개인의 성향과 중년기에 수행했던 역할에 초점을 맞추어 비슷한 역할을 지속적으로 수행하는 것이 가장 바람직한 노년기 사회활동이라고 주장하는 지속이론(Continuity theory)을 노년기 사회활동의 개념적 지표로서 제시하고 있다. 구체적으로, 노년기 사회활동에 대한 정의와 의미, 그리고 유형들을 규명하였으며, 현재 한국사회 노인들의 사회활동의 실태를 살펴보고, 그 문제점들을 1) 한국노인들의 전통적 가족주의 및 수동적 성향, 2) 노년기 사회활동에 관한 사회적 규범의 부재와 3) 정부지원의 미비 등으로 진단하고, 활기차고 바람직한 노년기 사회활동을 활성화하기 위해 1) 노년기 연령규범 확립과 사회화를 위한 평생교육프로그램의 개발과 지원의 확충, 2) 생산적 복지로서의 노인복지 구현, 그리고 3) 민간영역(실버산업)의 육성이라는 제언을 제시하였다.
The purpose of this study is to analyze social activities in later life in Korea. For this, the opposite theoretical perspectives, the disengagement theory and the activity theory, are explained. In order to overcome the theoretical weakness of these theories, this study suggests the continuity theory which stresses the personal life style and the roles of middle age in life for successful aging. This study suggests three aspects for successful aging m Korea such as 1) building norms of ages and developing adult education programs for socialization in later life, 2) reanalysis of welfare for the elderly (from \'assistant welfare\' toward \'productive welfare\' for the elderly), and 3) enhancing the senior industry in civil area.
