In psychoanalytic literature, the term 'transference' appears for the first time in Studies on Hysteria(1885). Here this psychological phenomenon was regarded as an obstacle to the work of analysis and thus to be removed. Many historians of psychoanalysis point to the case of 'Dora' as the true start of Freudian transference. The Dora case is extensively discussed in Fragment of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria(1905). Through his experience of analysis with Dora, Freud realized that in analytic encounter it was essential to pay close attention to the nature of the relationship between patient and analyst. It came to his attention that patients unknowingly invested their analyst with those meanings and attributes which belonged to their past. This thesis purports to analyze the client's transferential responses to the literary text as represented in the literature therapy. Thus it attempts to make manifest the structure of the client's response to the text in terms of the mechanism of the transference happening in the situation of psychoanalysis. Using the transferential map of Jill Scharff and David Scharff as the frame of reference, this study researches how the readers reading a literary text respond transferentially to a particular scene or event in the text. The transferential responses can be divided into four types in terms of time and space: now-here, now-there, then-here, then-there. Synthetically taking into consideration these four types of transferential responses to the text, the present researcher could read into the client's psychically pathological problems derived from her past. Thus telling her articulately what is going on in her reaction to the literary text, the examiner could approach her pathological mechanism, making the unconscious patterns of her behavior conscious. That is what we mean by the literatherapy, or literature therapy.
