The primary purpose of this study was to implement school sports clubs through introducing
new sports to elementary students and to investigate how school sports clubs in elementary
schools may be activated. The participants were 470 students attending three different
elementary schools and 3 teachers of the schools in D metropolitan city. Sports clubs were
implemented in the schools from March 2008 to February 2009. The result of the study are as
follows: First, teachers who implemented school sports clubs with new sports selected the
events of the sports based on selective activities and compatibility; they also reconstructed the
curriculum, wrote lesson plans and journal entries, and had class discussions; Second, they
participated in various teacher training programs such as after-school training programs,
workshops, regional and national competitions, and self-training programs; Third, the
implementation of school sports clubs with new sports revealed that new sports are effective
for solving problems existing in current school sports clubs. Furthermore, new sports need to
be planned according to the school curriculum, various school sports club competitions need to
be prepared, and supporting activities and related equipment purchases are necessary. In
addition, the implementation of school sports clubs help students to learn how to respect others
and themselves, to develop ethical attitudes, self-confidence and talents.
