The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning method improving the understanding
on fraction by using pattern blocks in elementary school fraction learning, to enhance the
achievements in mathematics learning, and to provide students with positive attitude in
mathematics learning. This study introduces pattern blocks as manipulative materials for
fraction learning, which students think difficult in elementary school mathematics education.
Fraction learning method focusing on manipulative materials operating activities using
pattern blocks was developed for relational understanding based learning activities. It was
applied for elementary school the 4th graders to analyze the effects on mathematics learning
achievement, relational understanding and learning attitude improvement. The effect as a
meaningful learning method which promotes the fraction concept formation was verified.
