The purpose of this paper is to suggest the improvement plans of opera listening education for high school students. In order for this, this paper, first, examined the opera parts of the eight music text books which are written on the 7th curriculum. Second, surveys were conducted by 200 high school students in randomly selected scools in Seoul and KungKy province. The questionnaires in the survey are classified into four areas: the current situation of the music listening classes and the opera listening classes, students' preference toward music classes, and hopes for the opera listening classes. Most of students (55%) prefer a music listening class while only 32% students prefer a music theory class. 88% students are satisfied with listening opera at school; howver, only small amount of students are seoriously listening opera. In addition, the main reason for them to listen to opera is to relax. Majority of studnets still prefer popular music and none of them likes Korean traditional music. However, they hope their teachers to teach them not only various knowleges of opera, but also how to listen to opera properly. According to the reseach, most of students still had a chance to listen to opera through schools and they, relatively, have good impressions. However, they do not exactly know what to listen and how to listen. Therefore, teachers should provide enough informations and use various materials to improve their appreciation for opera.
