Each region has tried to make a strategy in order to adapt to the rapid process of globalization and localization. This is the reason that the daily life and life space are more importantly considered in recent years. In accordance with the need of the times, education should develop the pertinent aims and contents, and the suitable teaching-learning method. Locality education or community education, which is a long history in social studies education, is probably the most pertinent unit even matching with the need of the times. Locality education, however, has been located in the outskirt of social studies education without much attention so far. This research analyzes the contemporary situation provides the future task for the better locality education on the basis of the survey results. Several suggestions for the better locality education are shown as follow;
First, local educational institutes should set up a consistent plan on locality education and continue to push forward positively. It is desirable that the plan is developed through a deliberate discussion with teachers. They should try to make a financial support for teachers and specialists of locality education to find out the hidden material and to develop the pertinent educational techniques.
Second, locality education should be improved in the aspect of learning methods from the knowledge memorizing method to the inquiry-oriented method for problem solving. Also the locality education, which is mainly carried out in classroom, more requires the field work experience such as observation, interview, and field survey. For the change, it requires the times of class work to be more increased. It is also important that social studies teachers take active part in the management of locality education. Their role makes the greatest contribution to the success of the education.
Third, it is worth while considering the method to create and utilize a separated curriculum focusing on locality education. Also, it is urgently needed new textbooks to restructure the contents in order to fit the regionalization of curriculum. For the development of new textbooks and substitutes, the active participation of teachers and scholars versed into the region is required.
