본 연구는 기악 전공생들의 전공악기 선택에 영향을 미치는 주요한 요인을 조사 연구하는 것에 그 목적이 었다. 이를 위하여 서울ㆍ경기 지역의 기타계 예술고등학교 4개교, 2학년 학생 497명을 대상으로 악기 선택에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 악기 및 음악에 관계되는 직업의 성별연합, 악기 음색 선호도, 자아상 및 환경적인 요소들을 설문 조사를 통하여 분석하였다. 특히 성 역할 기대의 현저한 차이를 보이는 우리 나라의 사회적 특성에 비추어 볼 때, 전공악기 선택에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 성별연합을 파악하고자 하는 것은 흥미로운 것일 수 있다 본 연구의 결과 전공 악기 선택에 주요한 영향을 미치는 사람은 부모, 본인 그리고 선생님의 순으로 나타냈으며, 남학생의 경우에는 여학생과 달리 본인의 결정이 우세하게 나타났다. 또한 부모가 전공악기를 권유한 이유로는 ‘그 악기에 대한 소질’을 가장 우선 순위로 하였으며 그 다음으로 ‘음악대학 진학을 위하여’로 나타났다. 또한 학생 본인의 선택이유로서는 ‘악기의 음색’을 최우선으로 하였으며, 그 다음으로 ‘부모님의 권유’, ‘유명연주가의 연주모습이 매력적이어서’ 순으로 나타나고 있고, 성역활 고정관념에 의한 악기의 성별연합의 요인은 낮은 순위를 보여주고 있다. 그러나 남학생의 경우에는 여학생에 비해 성별연합의 영향이 낮은 순위이긴 하지만 상대적으로 우세하게 나타나고 있다. 전공악기를 연주하는 본인의 연주 모습의 성별 연합은 여학생의 경우에는 중성적인 반면, 남학생의 경우 남성적인 경향을 나타냄으로써 성역활 고정관념에 의한 성별 연합이 남학생에게 뚜렷이 나타난다는 Abeles와 Porter(1978)의 연구 결과와 일치함을 알 수 있다. 본 연구에서 보여지는 남학생과 여학생의 성역활 고정 관업 영향의 정도 차이가 나타나기는 하나 두드러지지 않는 이유는, 본 연구의 대상의 특수성 즉, 기타계 예술고등학교에 재학중인 남학생의 수가 여학생에 비해 절대적으로 소수인 점에 기인한다고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 남녀 비율이 균등한 집단을 대상으로 한 후속연구를 통한 지속적인 연구가 수행되어야 할 것이다.
Studies suggest that the preference of musical instruments is affected by various factors such as timbre and appearance of the musical instrument, self-image, and gender stereotyping association. In particular, gender association was a prominent factor in instrument preference and activities. This study examines the factors affecting the choice of musical instrument for the major field of study among music instrument students in the high schools of the arts. Gender stereotyping relating to musical activities is also examined. Four hundred ninety seven high school music instrument majors from four different arts high schools participated in the study. A questionnaire was conducted to collect information on the research questions. The responses to the questionnaire were analyzed by using the SAS(Statistical Analysis System) package at Ewha Womans University Statistics Laboratory. Based on these results, the study found that the parents are the most influential factor to the majority of high school music students in the selection of instrument for their major field, followed by the students own decision. The timbre of the particular instrument is a major consideration in making a decision. It also found that gender association with the instrument is not the important factor in the preference of instrument for their major field. However, the study shows that gender association is rather related to their self image as a performer. It also reveals that gender stereotyping displays a weak, but slightly stronger relation to the male students choice of instrument than to the female.
