본 연구의 목적은 청소년의 성격 강점과 행복추구경향 간의 관계에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 중 고등학생 698명(중학생 341명, 고등학생 357명)을 대상으로 성격강점검사(Values in Action Inventory of Strengths for Youth: VIA-Youth) 단축형과 행복추구경향 척도(Orientations to Happiness Scale)를 실시한 후, 성격 강점과 행복추구경향의 상관관계를 분석하였으며 성격 강점이 행복추구 경향에 미치는 영향력 을 검증하였다. 본 연구 결과, 청소년의 성격 강점 중 겸손을 제외한 모든 성격 강점이 행복추구경향의 하위요인 2개 이상과 유의한 상관을 보였다. 또한 성격 강점이 행복추구경향에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결 과, 중학생 집단에서는 통찰과 영성이, 고등학생 집단에서는 용감함과 감상력이 행복추구경향의 3가지 하위요인 모두에 정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그 외에도 즐거움 추구경향의 경우에는 감상력과 유머가 정적 영향을, 자기조절이 부적영향을 미치는 것으로 중고등학생 모두에게서 나타났다. 의미 추구 경향의 경우에는 통찰, 활력, 감상력, 영성이 중고등학생 모두에서 정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 몰입 추구경향에서는 중고등학생에게 공통된 성격강점이 확인되지 않았다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 의의와 제한점이 논의되었다.
The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationship between character strengths and orientations to happiness in adolescents. For this purpose, the present study examined the tendencies of character strengths and orientations to happiness in adolescents, the differences in character strengths and orientations to happiness between middle school students and high school students, the correlations between character strengths and orientations to happiness, and the effects of character strengths on orientations to happiness. The results exhibited that most of character strengths had significant positive correlations with orientations to happiness. Among character strengths, perspective and spirituality exerted significant positive effects on orientations to all of the three factors of orientations to happiness in middle school students. As for high school students, bravery and appreciation of beauty exerted significant positive effects on all of the three factors of orientations to happiness. Lastly, the implications and limitations of the present study were discussed.
