This study investigated the effects of art therapy on reducing the behavioral problems and improving the
self-expression of a child with a tendency of ADHD exposed to a multi-lingual environment. The study
participant was a boy who was 5 years old (55 months) at the start of the art therapy program. According
to the participant's mother, the boy showed symptoms associated with ADHD and autism at about 40
months. The boy was diagnosed as having a tendency of ADHD after moving in Korea. He also had a
problem expressing himself. The art therapy program ran a total of 50 sessions, each session 60 minutes
long, once a week. In this study K-ADHDDS was used to measure the behavioral problems and
self-expression of the participant. The instrument was administered before and after the therapy program.
Change in the participant's self-expression was observed and recorded as the therapy program progressed.
The findings of this study are as follows. First, the art therapy program alleviated the excessive behavior
and impulsivity of the participant. Second, the art therapy program improved the participant's
self-expression. These findings suggest that art therapy was effective in reducing the ADHD behavior and
improving the self-expression of the participant.
