The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the Group Art Therapy for Self-Esteem
Improvement by analyzing the changing process of participants who were institutionalized children due to
divorce and violence of their parents. The objects were 6 school children in G nursery facilities, and the
program accomplished 15 times(once a week, 90-100 minutes) from September 2nd to December 9th. The
measuring instrument was The Self-Esteem Scale, Draw-A-Person Test, phased observation method of verbal
and non-verbal behavior and analyzing changing process of the art works. As a result, the score of the
Self-esteem Scale showed significant change in before-after test. In the preliminary examination of
Draw-a-man Test, confusion of gender identity and passive aggressive attitude were appeared by and large,
but in the post test, there were recovery of confusion of the gender identity and increases of active
interaction. Also, after we looked at the verbal and non-verbal behavior their timid and negative expression
changed more clearly and positively as the session progressed. Finally, as we analyzed the changing process
of the art works, at first there were a lot of negative and aggresive parts about their bodies, but gradually
expression of hope for the future and appreciation about their bodies are increased.
