The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of self-discovery through group art therapy for
adolescents on increase in self-esteem and decrease in anxiety. The subjects for the study were 12
maladjusted adolescents in school (n = 6 experimental, n = 6 control) who were asked to have this group
art therapy program under the counselling results in a middle school in G city. The total of 12 sessions
were conducted, each with 60 minutes every week from November 1st to December 26th, 2011. Anxiety
scale, self-esteem scale, were used as measurement tool to verify the effect of this program. In the analysis
of the data materials, the independent Mann Whitney U test was carried out for the homogeneity test
between the groups. The Wilcoxon signed ranks test, was used to verify the effectiveness of the program.
The results were as follows. Firstly, the task of self-discovery through art therapy program had an effect on
the improvement of the self-esteem of the maladjusted adolescents. Secondly, the task of self-discovery
through art therapy program had an effect on decrease anxiety of the maladjusted adolescents.
Consequently, the self-discovery through group art therapy have an effect on increase self-esteem and
decrease anxiety for adolescents.
