Foreign language education is an essential part in EIU. It is because foreign language plays an important role not only in communication with people from different cultures, but also in the development of cultural knowledge and attitude. But the focus in foreign language education has mostly been placed on linguistic competence rather than cultural one. This study tries to find out the associations between foreign language study and the major EIU elements, such as interests in foreign culture, attitudes toward international issues, worldmindedness and international etiquette through an empirical study. A sample of 482 university students from tourism-related majors where foreign language study is emphasized was used for a statistical analysis. The study results revealed that foreign language attitudes had the highest association with the interests in foreign culture(r=.63), being followed by attitudes toward international issues (r=.41), worldmindedness(r=.41), and international etiquette(r=.39). It was also found out that these associations were most prominent with the integrative attitude, while the instrumental attitude showed a low association being statistically significant only in English language group. Based on these findings, it was suggested that the integrative attitude in foreign language learning, rather than the instrumental attitude, should be encouraged in order to increase the level of international understanding of language learners. Especially a provision of opportunities to have contacts with target language communities was emphasized. A need for future research in relation to the integration of EIU in foreign language education was suggested.
