The combination of the ten celestial stems is the manifestation of East Asian view
of universe and world, which states that Yin and Yang and the Five Elements from
the Great Absolute are combined in a profound way and create all creatures, through
the ten celestial stems representing the heaven, meaning the relations of mutual
changes and actions among the ten celestial stems. The ten celestial stems being
combined and becoming are like one Yin and one Yang meeting together and creating
all creatures according to the truth of couple. Thus the combination of one Yin and
one Yang is the most important. Two celestial stems that are combined through Yin
and Yang engage in rising, offsetting, and supplementing according to their nature,
thus coloring each of the five combinations of the ten celestial stems with their own
temperament. There are some cases in which they seem to be combined but are not
combined actually(合而不合) and other cases in which they are combined but have
not become(合而不化). There are several organization principles in the combination of
the ten celestial stems including Ogigyeongcheonseol, Eumyanghapdeokseol,
Seoncheonhadoseol, and Dungiwolsiseol. There is no saying that some of them are
right and others are wrong. They allow for looking at the meanings of diverse cases
of combination and becoming implicated in the combination of the ten celestial stems
from many different perspectives.
