이 연구는 대한제국말기 統監府에 의해 사용이 금지된 修身 敎科書에 나타난 ‘愛國心 鼓吹’의 주요내용 사례를 분석하고 여기서 나타난 특징이 무엇인가를 究明하는데 있었다. 연구 결과 ‘애국심 고취’의 주요 내용은 愛國心論, 犧牲精神, 忠君愛國, 愛國心 涵養 등의 순이었고 이러한 내용의 중요한 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 일반적인 ‘애국심 고취’가 아닌 애국심의 고취가 國權恢復의 역량을 증대 함에 있어 가장 큰 원동력이 됨을 다양한 이론 사례에서 표출시켰다. 둘째, 희생정신의 사례들은 빈도면에서는 애국심론에 비해 적었으나 가장 실천적이고 핵심이 되는 내용이었다. 셋째, 충군애국의 질서가 민족 단결의 구심점이 될 수 있음을 국가의 위기상황 극복의 차원에서 강조하였다. 넷째, 애국심 함양의 정신적 가치는 당시 시국에 대한 우려와 이를 타개하기 위한 자세의 확립을 위한 것이었다.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the main contents and features of the instillation of patriotism shown in Moral Textbooks which was prohibition at the end of the Dae-Han Empire. The main contents of the instillation of patriotism consisted of the theory of patriotism, spirit of self-sacrifice, loyalty to the king and love of the nation and cultivation of patriotism. The features of main contents are as follows. (1) It was confirmed that the instillation of patriotism was not simply centered on the moral education which was to stimulate the people to love their country in order to rehabilitate the nation's power. This was proved in the theoretical cases of patriotism such as self-sacrifice, loyalty to the king, and the cultivation of patriotism. (2) Spirit of self-sacrifice is less than the theory of patriotism, but it was best kernel of the instillation of patriotism. (3) It was found out that the factors of loyalty to the king and the love of the country revealed in the instillation of patriotism were emphasized in connection with the awareness of national polity. In the present context, loyalty to the king and the love of the nation was intended to confirm who was the nation's leader that could help overcome the nation's crisis. (4) The cultivation of patriotism exposed important of spirit's posture for overcome the difficults.
