This study is to determine the effect of the story making art therapy using scribble on the emotional
expression and story construction of the immigrant youths who are in a bilingual environment between
their native language and Korean, to provide them with help to adapt to Korean society. The 2
participants(client A, B) of this study were selected among the immigrant youths with less 1 year residence
in Korea who want to be treated by art therapy. The study was proceeded at ‘K Multi-cultural Counseling
Center’ located in S city from June 2012 to November 2012 to two participants under the same conditions
composed of total 22 sessions of 60 minutes for each one once a week. To determine the effectiveness of
emotional expression, the preliminary/post scale tests for emotional expression were performed, and the
changes in action and language based on the emotional expressions on each session were qualitatively
analyzed. And to find out the effectiveness of story construction, the finalized stories at the end of each
session were evaluated with the rating scale based on story structure concept and components, converted
into scores, and the degree of changes were constructed into graphs.
This study is resulted as follows: Firstly, the story making art therapy using scribble was effective for
the emotional expressions of immigrant youths. The preliminary/post-evaluation results of emotional
expression scale showed all of clients’ scores are improved, and sub-scale analysis results all are improved,
excluding client B’s compulsion intensity, who had an equal preliminary/post-evaluation scores. The result
of qualitative analysis by sessions showed that both participants increased the use of vocabularies for
emotional expressions with the process of sessions, and their actions and language were changed into
positive and hopeful expressions from negative emotional expressions. Secondly, the story making art
therapy using scribble was effective for the story constructions of the immigrant youth. This result of
evaluation indicated that all participants gradually improved the story structure concept and components
with the times.
Therefore, this study suggests art therapy of story telling using scribble could be utilized as an effective
therapy method for immigrant youths in adapting to the Korean society.
