This study examined the role of psychological acceptance for the relationship between middle
age women's Hwa-byung and their emotional awareness, ambivalence over emotional
expressiveness. Then the study tried to apply psychological acceptance to treat middle age
women's Hwa-byung. For this, survey was implemented to 170 middle aged women. The
women under investigation completed the scales for clarity of emotional awareness, for Korean
type ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and for action and acceptance questionnaire.
To prove mediating effect, path analysis was carried out using AMOS 18.0. Based on the
results, first, the relations between Hwa-byung, emotional awareness, ambivalence over
emotional expressiveness and acceptance showed that the clarity of emotional awareness had
higher correlation with acceptance, and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness showed
higher correlation with Hwa-byung. This means that the more the clarity of emotional
awareness is, the higher the psychological acceptance level is, and the more serious the
emotional expressive conflict is, the deeper the symptom of Hwa-byung is. Second, as the
result of examining mediating effect of acceptance on the relation between Hwa-byung and
clarity of emotional awareness and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, emotional
awareness and acceptance, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and acceptance, clarity
of emotional awareness and Hwa-byung, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and
Hwa-byung, acceptance and Hwa-byung had significant effects. This implies that even though
clarity of emotional awareness and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness can explain
Hwa-byung significantly, when acceptance is used as mediate variable, Hwa-byung is explained
better. So, when emotion is identified clearly, and self emotion is not controlled and is
appropriately expressed, the symptom of Hwa-byung is relieved. Also through psychological
acceptance for self emotional experience, Hwa-byung as one of anger syndromes is relieved
more. At the end of the study, the meaning of this study and limitations are discussed.
