이 글은 퇴계(退溪)가 창작한 노래인 「도산십이곡」 (陶山十二曲) 을 바탕으로 그의 음악관을 검토한 것이다. 이를 위해 「도산십이 곡발문」과 퇴계의 뜻을 노래한 「도산십이곡」 <언지>(言志)를 중 심으로 그가 지향하는 노래관을 중점으로 살펴보았다. 퇴계가 지 향하는 노래관은 첫째, 누구나 쉽게 부를 수 있고, 춤으로 표현할 수 있는 흥취을 지니고 있어야 한다는 점이다. 두 번째는 인간으 로서의 풍격(風格)을 표현해 내어야 한다는 점인데, 여기서 그의 풍격은 ①자연을 좋아함이 고질병이 되다시피 한 ‘천석고황’(泉石 膏?)’에서 찾을 수 있고, ②퇴계가 노년기를 맞이한 자신의 삶을 되돌아보며 남은 생애를 허물없이 살기를 바란다는 자성(自省)과 겸허함에서 그의 정신적 고상함과 아름다운 면모를 읽을 수 있다. ③그의 풍격은 고아한 언어를 사용함으로서 드러나는데, 어느 한 구절 가벼이 쓴 말이나 현란한 것이 없고, 일상의 말이면서 참된 의미전달에 충실한 용어의 활용에서 느낄 수 있다. 계속해서 퇴계 가 지향하는 노래관 세 번째는 타인과 사회, 만물과의 융화와 화 해를 위한 것이며, 네 번째로 시대정신을 반영하는 것이 퇴계가 지향하는 노래관이다. 퇴계는 그 스스로가 ‘온화하고 부드러우며, 넉넉한 인정을 갖을 수 있는 노래’[溫柔敦厚]를 불렀으며, 많은 사람들의 마음도 이와 같이 변하기를 희망하였다. 퇴계의 삶의 행보는 철학적, 문학적, 정치적, 교육이라는 영역을 초월하여 어쩌면 음악이라는 대중의 예술체계에서 그의 학문적이고 인간적인 면모의 총체성을 읽어낼 수 있다. 그러므로 그의 예술, 특히 음악관에 관한 연구는 앞으로 인류가 지향해야할 목표를 뚜렷이 제시할 수 있는 원동력이 될 뿐 만 아니라, 퇴계학의 세계화를 위한 우리의 자산이 될 것이라 확 신한다.
This paper examines Toegyeh's musical idea in Dosansibigok[陶山十二 曲] that has his songs. To understand his musical idea, the Epilogue and Eonji[言志], which explains his philosophy on music in Dosansibigok, were critically examined. His ideas on music proved as follows. First, songs should be sung easily by everyone and elegant so as to be expressed as dance. Second, songs should express an individual humane style. The humane style includes: ① The love of nature became even a malady, cheonseokgohwang[泉石高膏]. ② As he reflected his life in old age, he got to wish the rest of his life flawless, which shows introspection, humility and beauty of his spirit. ③ As his humane style was expressed by using elegant languages, there are ordinary and truthful words only but no imprudent or flashy ones in his writings. His third idea on songs is that songs are for reconciliation and compromise with things. Fourth, songs must reflect the Zeitgeist. Toegyeh himself sang mild, gentle and generous[onyusunhu, 溫柔敦厚] songs, and hoped people would be changed following him. Beyond those fields of philosophy, literature, politics and education, his walk of life reached even music, one of popular arts, and this only shows his totality both on scholarship and personality. Therefore, a study on his art and especially on musical idea will be a mainspring for finding the universal purpose as well as our asset for the globalization of Toegyeh Study.
