This study tried to prove the effect of Buddhist healing program on the elderly welfare through
empirical cases. In order to achieve this objective, this study conducted a case study on the elderly in
Yeongju, 'the village in cheerful laugh' that contributes to the elderly welfare. 'The village in cheerful
laugh' is a volunteering body serving for the local community around Yeongju, Gyeongbuk region.
This study verified followings. First, the current status of the Korean elderly, especially the rural
elderly are going through, were confirmed. More specifically, Chapter 3 checked the entity of the four
kind of pain of the elderly such as the economic poverty, the health and medical problem, the
inaction(无?) and dullness(无聊) and the social alienation. Second, this study reconstructed the cases
analytically. More specifically, chapter 4 reconstructed the volunteering activity that 'the village in
cheerful laugh Yeongju' has been practicing in terms of laughter healing program. Especially
presented were the therapeutic effects of wholesome entertainment, indoor games, a silver recreational
dance, folk dance, haircutting & hairdressing service, magic, recreation, therapeutic recreation, music
therapy and laughter therapy. Third, this study interpreted what significance this treatment program
will have in terms of Buddhist apologetics. In particular, out of the laughter therapy programs of 'the
village in cheerful laugh Yeongju', Buddhist significance, that is included in laughter therapy, praise
laughter, sticker play, massage, etc., as well as which level of meditating implications the stable mind
will have, was presented.
