As it is sometimes suggested a history of mankind is a history of war, the military affairs play an important role in understanding history. In particular, as for South Korea it cannot be denied that the military occupies a unique position during the course of the country's short but dramatic history whether the military has been a positive influence or a negative one. Despite the fact that the military affairs should be seriously dealt with, in reality researches on the military affairs have been less than satisfactory, and it should be admitted that even within the military community, interests in the role and importance of military museums which collect, preserve, exhibit, and research various military data is insufficient. This reality has caused the poverty of the military study in general aggravated by the fact that the military affairs have been isolated as a special area restricted under various control measures. This paper has been prepared to outline the present states of the military museums in Korea and their future tasks. However. it is also true that under the present circumstance it is not possible to bring about in-depth discussions on the military museums. Also although it is my intention to present a systematic analysis of the museums of all three military branches - the army, the navy, air force -, it mainly focus on the air force museum with some supplementary data from other museums due to a limit on available data. This paper is a general overview whose responsibility is to open a constructive discussion on the military museums.
