The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of the group art therapy program on the stress,
depression, and self-esteem of university athletes. The subjects were 68 students who were registered to the
art therapy course at N University in Seoul. The group art therapy program was performed for 120
minutes. once a week over 15 sessions in total. In order to analyze the effect of the program, the following
indexes were used: the index of perceived stress standard, the index of athletic stress, the index of PITR,
the index of depression, and the index of self-esteem. The paired t-test was performed for the before and
after therapy scores. The results were as follows. First, there was significant difference in the mean of
perceived stress and athletic stress between pretest and posttest. However, there was not a statistically
significant difference in the academic stress coping. Second, in the case of the index of PITR, the posttest
score was significantly low rather than the pretest score. However, there was not a statistically significant
difference in the stress coping. Third, there was a statistically significant difference in the mean of
depression and self-esteem between pretest and posttest. Accordingly, the group art therapy had effects on
the perceived stress standard, athletic stress, depression, and self-esteem. However, the group art therapy
had no effects on the academic stress coping and the stress coping of PITR.
