Somatization Disorder and Hwa-Byung Disorder have physical symptoms and emotional
symptoms in which anger and depression are mixed. In order to determine the relation that
Somatization Disorder and Hwa-Byung Disorder have with anger repression, this study used
MMPI-Ⅱ's ANG scale, which is self-report examination and blank reaction(S), attack
movement reaction(AG), attack content reaction(AgC) of Rorchach test, which is a projective
test to evaluate the level of anger reported not only on the conscious level, but also on the
unconscious. This study targeted, based on DSM-Ⅳ 19 patients and 23 patients, each of who
are diagnosed with Somatization Disorder and Hwa-Byung Disorder, and was compared with
20 members of the normal comparison group. According to one-way ANOVA, anger reported
on the conscious level in Hwa-Byung Disorder group was higher than Somatization Disorder
group and the normal group, and anger content reaction(AgC) among angers reported on the
uncounscious level showed higher level in Somatization Disorder group than in the normal
group. In other words, Hwa-Byung Disorder group showed larger expression of anger on the
surface than the normal group, which determined that Hwa-Byung Disorder patients express
their depression and anxiety as parts of emotional reaction due to flawed anger repression, and
physical expression of negative emotion was partially reducing negative emotion reaction. Also,
the result that attack content reaction(AgC) among angers reported on the unconscious level
showed higher level in Somatization Disorder group than in Hwa-Byung Disorder group or in
the normal group supports the existing studies that said repression of emotional expression is
closely related to somatization. However, this study did not show a significant relationship between S and AG reactions which are anger related reactions in Rorchach test, and it was
hard to confirm these reactions in Sotimazation patients and Hwa-Byung patients because they
are related to acting out. This study is meaningful for proposing the basic material in
measuring anger repression and treatment of Somatization Disorder and Hwa-Byung Disorder
patients, this suggests the need to evaluate anger in Somatization Disorder and Hwa-Byung
Disorder patients through a multi-dimentional way using various tools.
