베네치아 상인들이 중세 말 지중해 향신료 무역을 거의 독점했다는 것은 일반적으로 인정되는 역사적 해석이다. 이를 증명하기 위해 본 논문은 1395년 한 해 동안의 베네치아 향신료 무역을 상세하게 재구성하려고 한다. 본 논문은 원로원 회의 기록, 회계 장부, 상업 편지, 상업 안내서 등 다양한 사료를 활용할 것이다. 베네치아 상인들이 중세 말 향신료 무역에서 가장 많은 몫을 차지할 수 있었던 첫 번째 이유는 정부가 향신료 상인들에게 체계적이고 효율적인 서비스를 제공했기 때문이다. 무엇보다도 알렉산드리아와 베이루트에서 베네치아로의 향신료 수송을 전담하는 갤리 선단이 이러한 독점권 형성에 크게 기여했다. 이 외에도 베네치아 정부는 아시아 향신료가 지중해로 들어오는 주요 노선을 장악하고 있었던 맘루크 제국과의 우호적인 관계를 유지하기 위해 노력했다. 이러한 우호적인 관계는 다른 기독교 국가들이 베네치아가 맘루크의 정치 군사적 동맹 세력이라는 의심을 사게 만들기도 했다. 하지만 이러한 정부의 후원 덕분에 베네치아 상인들은 다른 경쟁자들보다 유리한 조건에서 향신료 무역을 할 수 있었다. 베네치아 상인들은 충분한 고객을 확보하고 있었다. 베네치아 상인으로부터 가장 많은 양의 향신료를 구입한 상인은 바로 북부 이탈리아와 남부 독일 출신의 상인들이었다. 중세 말 북부 이탈리아 지방은 유럽에서 경제적으로 가장 발전된 지역이었기에 충분한 구매력을 가지고 있었다. 남부 독일 상인들은 중세 후반 은광 개발 덕분에 충분한 귀금속을 보유하고 있었으며 이 현금으로 베네치아 시장에서 향신료, 비단과 면화를 구입했다.
It is generally accepted that Venetian merchants nearly monopolized the spice trade in the Mediterranean in the Later Middle Ages. To prove it, this article tries to reconstruct in detail the developments of the Venetian spice trade during the year of 1395. This article uses a diverse array of sources including documents of the Venetian Senate, account books, commercial letters, guidebooks of commerce, etc. The first reason that Venetian merchants had the lion’s share of the spice trade in the Later Middle Ages was that the government of Venice offered systematic and efficient services to merchants of spices. First of all, two convoys of galleys, the main function of which was to transport spices from Alexandria and Beyrouth to Venice, contributed much to the Venetian monopoly. The Venetian government made a great effort to have good relations with the Mamluks who were occupying the main routes of the oriental spices from Asia to the Mediterranean. Other Christian countries were suspicious of their intimate relations, suspected Venice of being a political and military ally of the Mamluks, and feared they would attack the Christians. However, thanks to these supports, Venetian merchants had a more privileged position in the spice trade than other competitors. Lastly, merchants of Venice had sufficient clients. Those of Northern Italy and of Southern Germany, which have purchased a great amount of spices. Northern Italy was one of the most economically developed regions in the Later Middle Ages, and had enough money to buy expensive items like spices. Merchants of Southern Germany had a great amount of precious metals that permitted them to procure spices, silk, and cotton in the market of Venice.
