A man of high birth used to have many names in the Chosun era. Samyungdang(四溟堂), who entered the Buddhist priesthood, had been called many names. His layman name was Im, Ung-Kyu(任應奎), his Buddhist name was Yu-Jung(惟政), and his minor name was E-Whan(離幻). He used Jong-Bong (鍾峰) as a pen name before the Japanese[Hideyoshi's] invasion of Korea in 1592, and afterwards he began to go by Song-Woon(松雲). Sa-Myung-Tang was his Buddhist sanctum, and Ja-Thong-Hong-Je-Jon-Ja(慈通弘濟尊者) was an honor title given after death. As Samyungdang passed away, his disciples came to Hur-Kyun(許筠) with Samyungdang's works and asked him to write a preface to the book as a favor. He was then also asked to write the monumental inscription. Since Samyungdang had obtained a government position with Jong 2-phum, and also made a great contribution against the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, he deserved to be titled with an honor title from the king. However, Samyungdang was not a Confucian, but a Buddhist, so the subject of his honor title was never brought up. Thus, Hurkyun acknowledged Samyungdang with a personal honor title, and inscribed it on the gravestone. The honor title was supposed to be given along with an inscription written by the king, which explains the meaning of the title. Hurkyun decided on Ja-Thong-Hong-Je-Ja as an honor title for Samyungdang, and explained it in an inscription of his own. Hong-Je(弘濟) means "a wide saving of living things," which is a Buddhist term that is used in Confucianism as well. According to an authentic record of dynasty, this term was often used especially during the Sunjo(宣祖) dynasty, in which the Japanese invasion of Korea took place. Furthermore, this term carried the same effect of a title given by a King.
