People in modern society are enjoying convenience by scientific technology and
bountifulness consequent on economic development, but on the other hand, such
bountifulness is rather isolating humans. As a result, they've come to have a thirst
for transcendence, pursuit of the meaning of life, and desires for self-fulfillment or
self-realization. The outlook on Man of social welfare is the human view
integrating physical-emotional-social aspects. It's necessary to broadly understand a
human by adding a spiritual aspect to these three aspects. Many social workers are
looking for a guide who knows how to deal with religious and spiritual aspects in
people's life. Even in the realm of social welfare, the use of the term of
'Spirituality' is increasing and the research on this is in progress, but insomuch as
this word is being used in religion, in reality, the consistent and agreed meaning
of the concept is short. Hereupon, this study tried to find the concept of
spirituality useful for social welfare field in Korea. Spirituality is neither a religion
nor a faith, but a broad expression of 'Transcendence' as a human's universal
nature(essence) in a new method. However, it can be defined as a term for newly
expressing what the existing term fails to reflect according to the change of the
times. In addition, spirituality seems to be a change from the dualistic
understanding of a human as body and mind to triality principle including
something transcending body and mind (psychology). In other words, spirituality is
the shift from dichotomization to contrast of body and mind to trisection of
body, mind and spirit( psyche, soul). It can be said that spirituality in pursuit of
the understanding of a new human and an integrative, holistic human gives not a
few implications to the human view which social welfare must have. Spirituality
will presents an individual with human life's plentifulness and a sense of stability
and fulfillment and gets them to lead a healthy and harmonious life by inducing
an individual to realize the meaning of oneself and pursue the transcendental,
sacred and awakening, and make the practice of social welfare more effective and
abundant by helping social workers to assist an individual to lead such a life.
