With transition from the industrialization society into the information society,
education has been expected to raise core competencies to effectively deal with
challenges of modern society. This study aims to examine the requirements to
realize ‘modernization of education’ that fosters learner-centered curriculum and
integrated curriculum, rather than knowledge or skills-centered curriculum, by
putting emphasis on students’ realities and problems of modern society.
For the purpose of the study, I presented the requirements to embody
teaching and learning practices from which the principles of convergence education
incorporating issues of modern society can be drawn. Then I investigated
educational ideology and practices of ?construction and expression? of Seoul Arts
High School as an example of modernized curriculum reconstruction. From the
results of this study, the four principles to form convergence education and realize
modernization of education were found. Those principles will play an essential role
of embodying modernization of education in teaching and learning practices in art
education.
