The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of 12-week elastic band exercise on arterial pulse wave velocity (PWV)
in aged women with hypertension. As the subjects, this research selected 30 aged women with hypertension according to the
diagnosis criteria of the Korean Society of Hypertension among the new participants at the hypertension exercise class provided
by a health center located in K City. And 15 of them were assigned to an exercise group and a non-exercise group each
through random allocation. The exercise intensity of the elastic band exercise program was within the range of 12-15 (HRR
60~80%) according to Borg’s RPE (rating scales of perceived exertion: 15-point scale), and the exercise was conducted for total
12 weeks, three times a week, and 60 minutes in each time. In terms of the items measured before and after the exercise, the
PWV of their upper and lower limbs was measured by using PWV 3.0 (KM-tec, Korea) based on the PWV. For data analysis, the
study conducted ANCOVA using SPSS 18.0, and the significant level was set as .05. According to the changes of their PWV after
the elastic band exercise conducted for total 12 weeks, three times a week, and 60 minutes in each time, with its intensity in
the range of RPE 12-15, it influenced the PWV reduction of their left and right feet positively; therefore, it can be concluded
that elastic band exercise is appropriate for aged women with hypertension in reducing their PWV.
