The number of old people who live in the elderly housing facilities is going up with increase of the life
expectancy. Their life satisfaction level is low due to separation from family members, unfamiliar
environment, limited activity space, and controlled free life. This study was conducted to explore the effect
of the cognitive-behavioral group counseling on life satisfaction in the elderly who live in a elderly housing
facility. As pre-examination, the levels of life satisfaction in both the experimental group and the control
group were measured. After nine times of the cognitive-behavioral group counseling were tried for the
experimental group, the levels of life satisfaction in both groups were again measured. The results of this
study can be summarized as follows. The experimental group showed significantly high score than that of
the control group in the level of life satisfaction. In the later examination which was conducted after 8
weeks, the experimental group also displayed high score. In conclusion, the cognitive-behavioral group
counseling appeared to be effective psychological intervention in increasing life satisfaction in the elderly.
Thus it is suggested in this study that the counseling program must be used in the elderly housing
facilities to improve quality of old people's life.
