The purpose of this study is to find the effects of social skills program on enhancing self-esteem, social competence and social skills of students who were in social welfare. This research was carried out on the subjects of 25 2nd to 5th graders of Y elementary school in Busan, who lives in social welfare. The subjects were randomly assigned to an experimental group which owned 13 members and a control group, 12 members. The experimental group was trained by the social skills program for 90 minutes a day, twice a week, in total 10 times for 5 weeks from November 27th to December 26th, 2002, while nothing was carried out on the control group. The instruments of the test were based on Self Esteem Inventory by Coopersmith(1984), SPPC (Self Perception Profile for children) by Hater(1985), MESSY(Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters) by Matson, Rotatori and Hesel(1983) and Roster & Rating Scale Measure by Oden and Asher(1997). The data was analyzed by ANCOVA and SPSS 10.0 program.
The results of the study were as follows;
First, the score of self esteem of the experimental group was significantly increased after training than that of the control group.
Second, the score of social competence of the experimental group was significantly increased after training than that of the control group.
Third, the score of social skills of the experimental group was significantly increased after training than that of the control group.
