This study compared certification and licensure of family therapy in Korea and the United States. The researchers examined the role of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) in regulating professional practice in the U.S. and contrasted this with the involvement, in Korea, of the Korean Association of Family Therapy (KAFT), the Korean Counseling Association (KCA), and the Korean Association of Family Relations (KAFR). Licensure systems in both countries were compared, and problems with the Korean system were identified. Based on these analyses, the authors outline necessary future tasks and make suggestions for certification and licensure of marriage and family therapists in Korea.
