본 연구는 학교 밖 청소년들의 손상된 학습성을 다시 회복되도록 하는 학습 공간의 조건을 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 한 사회적 기업 내의 커뮤니티에서 만나 다시 배우기를 시작한 사 람들을 인터뷰하였다. 연구 결과 이들의 학습성을 손상시킨 것은 학교의 경직된 교육과정, 입시 경 쟁으로 인한 진정한 교우관계 맺기의 어려움과 그것으로부터 오는 고독감과 소외감, 학생들을 통제 하려고만 하는 교사와의 관계에서 오는 갑갑함과 거부감인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 이유로 연구 참여자들은 학교에서 나와 또 다른 학습의 공간을 찾았고 여러 시행착오 끝에 한 공동체에 참여하 게 되었다. 이 대안적인 학습 공간에서 연구 참여자들은 자신을 있는 그대로 이해하고 존중해주는 관계를 만날 수 있었으며, 자신이 아는 것을 다른 사람들에게 가르쳐주고 배우는 과정 속에서 학습 성을 회복해간다. 그리고 이들의 학습성 회복은 공동체 안에서의 주체적 활동에 머무르지 않고 공 동체 너머 다른 배움의 가능성까지 스스로 모색하는 양상으로 발전하고 있었다. 본 연구는 공학적 으로 이루어지는 도구적 교육공간에서 학습성이 손상될 수 있음을 시사해준다. 그러나 인격적 만남 을 경험하고 시간을 함께 보내고 활동을 같이 할 관계를 서서히 만들어감에 따라, 그리고 스스로 하고 싶은 활동을 자연스럽게 해볼 수 있는 가능성들 속에서 학습성이 회복되고 활성화된다는 점도 함께 보여주고 있다. 이를 통해 학습을 가능하게 하는 공간은 환대의 분위기 가운데 친교와 우정이 이루어지며, 개인의 주체적인 배움의 노력이 적극적으로 인정, 지원되며, 그 가운데 개인적 꿈과 관심의 추구도 허용되고 존중되는 공간임을 알 수 있다.
The purpose of this study is to explore how did out-of-school youth whose propensity for learning had fallen down recover their propensity for learning. A qualitative research for examining five out-of-school adolescents' experiences is designed. Research participants shared their experiences in the community sponsored by a social enterprise as well as schools they had attended. Study findings show that because of the rigid curriculum of schools, difficulties of making friendship resulted from excessive competition, and conflict with coercive teachers behaviors on them, participants’ propensity for learning had fallen down. After leaving schools with harmed propensity for learning, they searched and visited the community. The community in which they participated was a place for recovering their propensity for learning. Three characteristics of the community as a place for recovering the propensity for learning are revealed: First, research participants could make a close friendship with community members such as mentors and existing members who are hospitable to participants. Second, research participants are constantly encouraged to do learning project within the community. Finally, the community is the place for developing self-direction in that every research participant became a person who are willing to design and attempt their own plans out of the community. The findings suggest that the propensity for learning can be enhanced by opportunities to learn self-directly in the place with hospitality and friendship originated from meaningful relationships.
