본 연구는 학생설계전공(Student-Designed Major)의 현황과 사례를 조사하고 실행과 확대를 위한 개선점을 모색하는 데에 목적이 있다. 학생설계전공은 둘 이상의 학과 또는 학문을 융 합하여 학생 스스로 전공을 설계하고 이수하는 것을 말하며 그 형식과 내용에서 융합, 학습 자 중심, 자기 주도성, 창의성 등 최근 교육 현장에서 강조하고 있는 이상을 잘 반영하고 있 다. 구체적으로 학생설계전공의 실제를 알아보기 위해 문화·예술과 융합하여 학생설계전공을 이수 중인 학생들의 서류를 분석하고 포커스그룹인터뷰(FGI)를 실시하였다. 그 결과 학생설 계전공 학생들은 본인의 적성과 흥미 및 진로를 다방면으로 탐색한 후 최소 셋 이상 학과의 전공과목을 융합하여 전공을 설계하였음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 학생설계전공의 장점은 자 신이 원하는 것을 배우는 즐거움, 전공을 설계하고 커리큘럼을 계획한 경험의 가치, 전공의 특수성이었으며 반대로 단점은 기초 소양 쌓기의 어려움, 학문적 공동체가 없다는 외로움, 행 정절차 상의 어려움 등을 들었다. 이를 토대로 학생설계전공의 확대 및 내실화를 위해서는 전문 관리 인력의 지원, 보다 엄격한 심의 과정을 토대로 한 학생의 자율권 확대 등이 요구 됨을 확인할 수 있었다.
The student-designed major is the convergence of two or more academic disciplines, which enables each student to design his/her own major and complete the course. The student-designed major most progressively reflects the ideal properties of current education such as convergence, learner-centered education and creativity. Students whose designed majors were interviewed and their application forms were analyzed. Students have exerted great efforts in order to find their aptitude, interest, major and career and designed their majors with at least three different departments’ courses as a result of serious contemplation. The advantages of the student-designed major were the enjoyment of studying what they want, the valuable experience of organizing a new major and curriculum, uniqueness of their majors. The weaknesses, in contrast, were the difficulty of obtaining general basic knowledge, lack of academic solidarity, and the difficulty with administrative procedure. Results suggest that the student-designed major are beneficial to students and the faculty as well as to the university while supports for professional consulting personnel, stricter investigation process, and expansion of students’ autonomy are further required.
