The student-designed major is the convergence of two or more academic
disciplines, which enables each student to design his/her own major and complete
the course. The student-designed major most progressively reflects the ideal
properties of current education such as convergence, learner-centered education and
creativity. Students whose designed majors were interviewed and their application
forms were analyzed. Students have exerted great efforts in order to find their
aptitude, interest, major and career and designed their majors with at least three
different departments’ courses as a result of serious contemplation. The advantages
of the student-designed major were the enjoyment of studying what they want, the
valuable experience of organizing a new major and curriculum, uniqueness of their
majors. The weaknesses, in contrast, were the difficulty of obtaining general basic
knowledge, lack of academic solidarity, and the difficulty with administrative
procedure. Results suggest that the student-designed major are beneficial to
students and the faculty as well as to the university while supports for
professional consulting personnel, stricter investigation process, and expansion of
students’ autonomy are further required.
