This study has been done to clarify how adults with intellectual disabilities, parents and
service providers recognize risk-taking behaviors of adults with intellectual disabilities in the
community by Q-methodology. First, in case of an adult with intellectual disability, three types,
‘Self-determined and prudent challenge type’, ‘Relation-based and active challenge type’,
‘Family-dependent and safety pursuing type’, were produced. Second, in case of parents, also
three types, ‘Social responsibility stressed and support type’, ‘Absolute vulnerability protection
type’, ‘Family-led prudent support type’, were produced. Third, in case of service providers,
two types, ‘Risk-taking support type’, ‘Safety prerequisite support type’ were produced.
By this study, we can find diverse perceptions and meanings on risk-taking of adults with
intellectual disabilities. These findings may contribute to facilitate discussion and communication
for the development of risk-taking practice.
