국문초록

본 연구는 해방 후 1960년대 초반까지의 한국의 성인문해교육을 재구성해 보되, 기존 연구에서 관 심을 기울이지 않고 있는 민간단체, 특히 기독교 선교활동의 일환으로 진행되었던 대한기독교계명협 회(KCLA)의 활동을 재구성해 보고, 이를 초기 성인문해교육의 학술적 연구대상으로 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 대한기독교계명협회는 1949년 Frank Laubach과 일행의 한국방문을 계기로 본격적인 성인문해교육활동을 시작하게 되었다. 협회는 선교를 목적으로 구락부를 조직하고, 이를 매개로 효과 적인 성인문해교육을 실시한 것으로 보인다. 이에 필요한 문해교육자료 및 읽기 자료 제작은 라우박 재단과 선교단체의 후원으로 이루어졌다. 협회의 활동을 통하여, (1) 한국 성인문해교육의 기적적인 양적 팽창에 민간단체의 역할이 컸으리라는 점을 새삼 강조할 수 있으며, (2) 이러한 민간단체들은 외 부, 특히 국외 교육지원에 크게 의존했으리라 판단되고, (3) 협회의 경우 외국인 선교사들이 아닌 국 내 전문가들이 주로 활동하였고, (4) 협회 성인문해교육활동 방법은 지원기관인 라우박 재단의 성인문 해교육활동에 영향을 받았고, (5) 여전히 협회의 활동성과에 대한 추가 자료 수집 및 분석이 요구된다 는 점을 논의하였다. 결론적으로 해방 후 민족국가형성기의 우리나라 성인문해교육을 재구성하고, 이 를 위한 자료수집과 정리, 보다 실증자료에 기반을 둔 연구가 보다 충실히 이루어져야 할 것이다.

영문초록

This study reconstructs adult literacy education in the Republic of Korea since its liberation and into the 1960s. The activities of civil society organizations have not been extensively treated thus far. The purpose of this study is to reconstruct and examine the activities of one such civil society organization, Korean Christian Literacy Association (KCLA), which contributed in adult literacy education as part of its Christian missionary activities. KCLA’s adult literacy education started with the impetus of Frank Laubach and his team’s visit to Korea in 1949. The association organized Literacy Clubs for Christian mission purposes, and initiated effective adult literacy education through this medium. Its teaching materials and literature were produced with the support of Laubach Foundation and missionary foundations. The association’s activities indicate: (1) civil society organizations would have had a considerable role in the miraculous expansion of Korean literacy; (2) civil society organizations would have largely depended on external, and especially overseas educational support; (3) in the case of KCLA, domestic professionals, rather than foreign missionaries, were the main actors; (4) KCLA’s adult literacy education activities were greatly influenced by the Laubach Foundation which funded them; (5) additional data are necessary to analyze the outcome of the KCLA’s activities. Finally, further rigorous research based on more substantial evidence and resources, is needed to reconstruct adult literacy education in the period following liberation and national construction.
