The purpose of this study is to investigate how integrated art and mathematics using storytelling
activities affects young children’s mathematical ability and art disposition. The subjects were 34
young children aged 5 (16 in the experimental group; 18 in the comparative group) in two
kindergartens located in Seoul. Integrated art and mathematics using storytelling activities were
conducted for experimental group for 8 weeks, whereas in the comparison group, mathematics and
arts activities based on life themes were used separately. The results of this study were as follows:
First, it was found that the integrated activities of arts and mathematics using storytelling had a
positive effect on the improvement of mathematical ability of young children, especially the
improvement of algebra, number and operation and measurement ability. Second, it was found that
the integrated activities of arts and mathematics using storytelling have a positive effect on the
promotion of art disposition of young children, and especially, it is effective to improve art
expression, art skills, understanding and appreciation of arts ability. In conclusion, integrated arts and
mathematics activities using storytelling is an effective teaching and learning method for developing
children's mathematical ability and art disposition.
