The purpose of this study was to find its meaning through examining the experience of Korean
traditional play (Dandongsibhun) between the mother and a baby, and to seek the succession and
improvement of tradition in child rearing method. To achieve this purpose, the qualitative research
was conducted with a mother and one-year-old infant during six months by in-depth interview,
observation, general interview, telephone counseling, and video recording. This study found that the
mother gained confidence as a mom through interacting with the baby in the traditional play
(Dandongsibhun), and the mother and the baby enjoyed the real fun and pleasure of playing the
game. In addition, the mother became change into a caregiver who respects small voice, gestures and
actions of the baby and reacts sensitively. Currently the mother is becoming 'mom of two children'
who actively seeking solutions although the worries and fears of mother's child rearing are still going
on. Dandongsibhun a Korean traditional play, helps secure attachment from the close touch between
baby(child) and mother. For this reason, it is necessary for parents to have a new understanding of
Dandongsibhun. Furthermore, we need to change the perception that such traditional plays are less
effective parenting skills that the modern plays based on scientific and objective data, and continue
study to discover many different types of traditional plays and rediscover the values of such
traditional plays.
