This study aimed to analyze children’s responses to illustrations in repeated read-alouds of picture
books, using categories proposed by Sipe (2008). The subjects of this study were 6 five-year-old
children attending a child care center in A city who were divided up to 2 target groups of 3
children in each. A total of 6 picture books of 3 different types were used, and the period of study
was from the 2nd week of November, 2015 to 3rd week of February, 2016, for 14 weeks
altogether. Repeated read-alouds (3 times) and an interview with each child were carried out for
twice a week, about 40 minutes per session. The sessions were audiotaped and videotaped. The
collected data was transcribed with a word process program and analyzed with the QSR NVivo 10.0
program. First, the analysis results showed that ‘Illustration layout, design, media, and style’, a
sub-category of analytic response, regarded the overall characteristics of a picture book, design and
pattern. Second, making meaning from the visual text which focuses on the code of graphic was
observed. Lastly, through additional analysis of responses, the analysis of cultural pattern and
materials, code of graphic: motion lines, and image appropriation emerged. The children's responses
to illustrations showed possibilities of other new categories and sub-categories other than those
proposed by Sipe (2008), suggesting a need for further studies on children's responses to illustrations.
