This study was designed to analyze the current status of empowerment approach in the Korean social work field and to find the alternatives. Based on the review of both domestic and foreign literature on empowerment and empowerment approach, some problems such as estrangement between ideology and practice, limitations of practice, and discordance between intervention contents and evaluation tools in Korean literature. For more in depth research on the cause of the problems and the analysis of the status, three methods were applied: a field research on the social service institutions adapting empowerment approach; an analysis of the practice cases applying the empowerment model; and a written interview with social workers practicing empowerment approach. As a result, it has been observed that empowerment approach in Korean social work practice settings is still at micro-level, or fragmentarily understood, or even losing its essence. Moreover, understanding an empowerment approach as an abstract and vague concept has been obstructing its revitalization in actual practice, regardless of its necessity. Based on the study results, it is safe to conclude that Korean empowerment approach is currently at the level of adaptation through challenges as well as trial and error. Thus, in the future, active discussion, multilateral approach, and exchange must be held for settlement of empowerment approach in the field of social work practice, research, and education in Korea.
