삼국유사에 있는 불상출현담은 설화가 본격적으로 제작되기 시작하고, 사회적으로는 지배이데올로기로서 무불(巫佛)이 교체되는 시기에 고대신화와 설화가 연계되는 문학 현상의 한 흐름을 보여준다. 신이 만물 현상의 배후에 작동자로 기능한다는 신화적 세계관과 달리, 불상출현담은 불교적 세계관의 영향 아래에 있음에도 불구하고, 몇몇 주요한 점에서 전대(前代)의 서사문학인 신화의 방식을 취하고 있다. 출현의 방식이나 서사의 진행순차, 발견과 봉안의 주체 문제, 성소관념의 유지 등에서 신화의 방식이 유지되고 있다. 의도적이든, 비의도적이든, 신화 주인공의 출현 방식이 지닌 사회적 효용을 인정하고 이용한 셈이다. 설화에서 불상은 인간사회에 예고 없이, 그리고 일상적이지 않은 방식으로 출현한다. 불교적 세계관에서 천신(天神) 같은 절대신이 부처보다 하위에 처하게 되었으나 불상은 신화의 주인공처럼, 절대신의 권역이었던 신성 이계(異界)에서 도래한다. 하늘에서 하강하며 땅, 물에서 출현하거나 바다로부터 배를 타고 온다. 서사의 주요 사건 즉, 출현, 발견, 봉안, 신이사로 이어지는 전개는 신화와 기본적으로 같다. 신화와 다른 세계관을 지녔으나 불상출현담은 전혀 새로운 방식을 개발하기보다는 전 시대의 서사물인 신화의 방식을 취하였다. 반면 불상출현담이 고대의 신화와 다른 점은 신화의 신성성이 설화에서 신이성으로 분화된다는 점이다. 신성성에서 신이성으로 분화된 가장 주요한 원인은 세계관의 변화에서 찾을 수 있다. ‘신성성’의 담지자로서 근원적 존재였던 절대신이 부처보다 하위에 놓이는 불교적 세계관에서 신적 가치인 신성성은 변화하게 된다. 설화에 나타나는 부처는 불교 본연의, 구도(求道)의 세계를 제시하지 않는다. 부처는 세속사에 관여한다. 왕이나 왕실을 수호하는 것으로 설정된다. 당대의 최고 권위를 지닌 부처가 수호하는 자가 왕이 되면서 인간사회에서는 왕에게 감히 저항할 자가 없다는 담론이 형성된다.
The Stories of Buddha Statue\'s Appearance in SamGukYuSa shows a literary tendency in the connection between the ancient myths and narratives on the era of change: The change from Shamanism to Buddhism as a ruling ideology of the ancient Korea. Unlike the mythological view, that God functions as a hidden operator of the world, - despite the fact that the stories of Buddha Statue\'s Appearance are under the world view of Buddhism - the Stories of Buddha Statue\'s Appearance took mythical ways in some points whether intended or not. The mythical ways are observed from the following facts: The way of Buddha statue\'s appearance into Human society, the narrative order of the story, the subject of finding and enshrinement, and the concept of sacred place. Whether intended or not, the way of the appearance of the mythic heroes into human society was recognized and used in the stories of Buddha Statue\'s Appearance. Buddha statue appeared into human society in a sudden and unusual way. Even though the status of the absolute beings like Sky-god became lower than Buddha at that time, the statue came into human society as the same way of those of mythical heroes: The statue came from the traditionally sacred place such as the sky, the ocean, the water and the earth. Narrative\'s flow of the stories of Buddha\'s appearance is basically same as myths in the previous time: Appearance, Discovery, Enshrinement, Supernatural event after Enshrinement. Meanwhile its view is different from the ancient myths, the sacredness of myth is diverged into the marvelousness. The main reason of divergence is found in the change of the world view. The absolute beings as the sacredness-bearer were placed under the Buddha. In this situation the value of sacredness was changed inevitably. Buddha in the stories doesn\'t present the religious way of its own. Instead, Buddha interfered into secular affairs. It functions as protector of the Royalty. A person who Buddha, the absolute authority, protected became a king. Therefore, the discourse that no one can resist against the king came into being.
