We looked into the features of modern trot songs focusing on those that enjoyed huge popularity during the latter half of the year 2004. Now, we can find out that modern trot songs have gone through quite a lot of changes from those in the Japanese colonial period.
Modern trot songs are different from previous counterparts in many ways including singers, vocalization and rhythm: Young generations make their debut as trot singers, but they no longer use a feigned voice, and the rhythm and tempo of their songs become faster and more joyful.
Next, we move on to the lyric lines. Today’s songs do not have one-sided and sexually biased lyrics any more. Trot songs are mainly talking about love like other popular songs. However, what makes trot unique is that its lyrics are usually related to married couples’ affection. One more, modern trot songs tend to describe divorce or parting as nothings. It might be not only the reflection of the times but a proof that this genre is a lot affected by Korean dance music.
Modern trot songs also use echoic and mimetic words, apostrophe, repeat measures to betray excessive expression. This expression, considered as low quality rather than high, is also another character of the modern trot. Contemporary trot songs are worthwhile since they can comfort people who like the genre as \'Shinminyo (New Folk Song)\' could do during the Japanese colonial period. But trot has a long way to go to get more widespread attention of and popularity from the public. Only when the public’s appetite and expectations can be met, trot can be blessed with unabated popularity.
